"I got a text!"

If you have never heard of it, Love Island is the hit dating reality show that is taking the world by storm. The UK version, the one studied here, is broadcast on ITV2. It is a revival of the earlier celebrity series of the same name, which aired for two series in 2005 and 2006. The series is presented by Caroline Flack and is narrated by Iain Stirling. The series launched on June 7th, 2015 on ITV2, and unlike the original series, the contestants are members of the public rather than celebrities. In 2018 it won a BAFTA TV Award for Best Reality And Constructed Factual show. The show has spawned an international franchise, including versions in Australia, Finland, Germany, Poland, Sweden, and the United States.

Project Findings

I chose to do my database project on the contestants of Love Island UK. I wanted to use my database to look further into the diversity of the contestants. The queries I completed were in the hopes of finding more information on the overall labels of the contestants. Secondarily, I love Love Island as a show and will take any opportunity to talk/read/learn about it. 🤷

The hardest part of this project was finding all the information for each contestant. Even now I am unsure on the validity of some of the columns, as I had to guess for most of their ethnicities if they were not listed on ITV. The biggest issue I faced was finding information, but I did my best to hunt down information or infer when it was not readily available.

I was most fascinated to see the number of couples that actually lasted after the show. Almost every contestant comes on the show saying they are there for love, but the quantity that actually find something long-lasting is low.
